Heavy Highway Shop Mechanic - Nacogdoches

 Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Troubleshoot and perform repairs on all types of heavy highway construction equipment to include; cranes, bulldozers, excavators, skid loaders, dump trucks, tractor trailers, and various other construction equipment.
  • Repairs and adjusts hydraulic pumps, safety valves, and load packers on dump trucks.
  • Inspects repairs and adjusts diesel power units, hydraulic systems, injection valves and systems, mold boards, and scarifies on road graders.
  • Inspect, adjust and repair gasoline and diesel tractors, and hydraulic and cable operated attachments on tractors.
  • Repairs and maintains trenching machines and sets proper grade.
  • Perform incidental welding operations on equipment.
  • Communicates any unsafe conditions or accidents/injuries in a timely manner to the supervisor in order to facilitate prompt correction or reporting.
  • Demonstrate continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless service.
  • Any other tasks as assigned.

Required Skills and Experience:
  • Two years heavy equipment mechanic work or Heavy Highway Construction Equipment repair experience preferred but not required.
  • Current valid driver's license (Class B required).
  • Welding and fabrication experience.
  • Trained in safety precautions of the trade.
  • Knowledge with parts and components of complex machinery and engines, as well as the tools to fix them.
  • Knowledge in the operation and maintenance requirements of heavy duty construction equipment.
  • Knowledge and understanding of diesel engines, hydraulic and pneumatic systems
  • Must be able to look at mechanical, hydraulic and electrical systems, identify problems, and think about possible solutions.
  • Must be familiar with electronics, be able to read blueprints, or use electronic diagnostic equipment to troubleshoot repairs.
  • Must be able to read, interpret, and understand electrical and hydraulic schematics along with service manuals to help diagnose issues to be able to make needed repairs
 
Mental and Physical Requirements:
  • Must have the ability to quickly respond appropriately to unexpected events.
  • Good hand-eye coordination help heavy equipment mechanics be successful.
  • This position may require long periods of standing and being subjected to adverse weather conditions.
  • Some equipment can be extremely heavy and will take a lot of strength to move or manipulate.
  • Wear Common Protective or Safety Equipment such as but not all inclusive Safety Shoes, Glasses, Gloves, Hearing Protection, and Hard Hats.
  • Position will consistently require a minimum of 40 hours per week with frequent overtime demands based on the workload requirements.

Work Environment:
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.  While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts; outside weather conditions and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
